New Delhi :– Barhamasa Rangmandal captivated audiences with a mesmerizing performance of Swyandeepa, a timeless mythological drama penned by Madhuri Subodh and masterfully directed by Arvind Singh Chandravanshi. The play was staged on at the prestigious Shri Ram Centre’s Praveshagarh, drawing theater enthusiasts to witness a profound exploration of love, betrayal, knowledge, and divine retribution rooted in ancient Indian lore.

Swyandeepa vividly brings to life the epic tale from the Puranas, centering on the demon guru Shukracharya, his devoted daughter Devyani, and Kach, the grandson of Sage Angira. Kach arrives at Shukracharya’s abode seeking the sacred knowledge of Mrit Sanjeevani – the elixir to revive the dead. Amid his quest, he encounters Devyani, who falls deeply in love and proposes marriage. Kach, bound by his higher purpose and lineage, respectfully declines. Enraged by rejection, Devyani curses him: “The Mrit Sanjeevani knowledge you acquire shall never benefit you.” In retaliation, Kach counters with his own curse: “You too shall never marry into a Brahmin family.”The narrative unfolds with poignant tragedy. Devyani eventually weds King Yayati, only to suffer heartbreak when he deceives her by secretly marrying her maid Sharmishtha.

Unable to endure the betrayal, Devyani abandons the royal palace and returns to her father’s ashram, embodying resilience and self-respect.On stage, the role of the formidable demon guru Shukracharya was powerfully portrayed by Delhi’s acclaimed theater artist Mukesh Jha, whose commanding presence anchored the production.
