Career opportunities for ex-servicemen, army spouses, and war widows

New Delhi, September 2025: Today, Amazon India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Army Welfare Placement Organisation (AWPO), an establishment under the Indian Army. The purpose of this MoU is to provide career opportunities within the company for ex-servicemen, army spouses, and war widows who lost their husbands in war.

This collaboration reflects Amazon’s commitment to offering opportunities to the exceptional skills of soldiers and their families. Through customised hiring methods, training, and development programmes, the company aims to help them transition smoothly into civilian life.

Under this agreement, Amazon India, in collaboration with AWPO, will focus on the three pillars of the military community—ex-servicemen, army spouses, and war widows—by sharing relevant job and placement opportunities to enable them to secure employment. Amazon will also conduct awareness sessions through webinars and workshops, where applicants will be informed about the career opportunities available at the company.

Deepti Varma, VP – People Experience & Technology, Amazon Stores India, Japan & Emerging Markets, said:
“At Amazon, we are committed to building a diverse workforce and creating an inclusive workplace. We recognise that ex-servicemen and their spouses possess leadership qualities. They focus on delivering results with action and ownership, which keeps operational excellence, mission focus, and leadership alive within an organisation. This aligns with Amazon’s culture. Our partnership with the Army Welfare Placement Organisation is a significant step toward supporting ex-servicemen, army spouses, and war widows. It will provide them with meaningful career opportunities in line with their skills and experience. We extend our gratitude to the Indian Army for this strategic partnership.”

This collaboration is in line with Amazon’s global commitment to support military families through initiatives such as the Military Spouse Fellowship Programme and the Military Hiring Programme, which provide career opportunities and mentorship to veterans and their families.

Speaking about the MoU, Major General Ajay Singh Chauhan, Shaurya Chakra, Sena Medal (Retd.), Managing Director, Army Welfare Placement Organisation, said:
“AWPO is dedicated to the welfare of soldiers and their families. Our collaboration with Amazon India will strengthen our mission of providing employment opportunities to soldiers, their spouses, and war widows. They bring exceptional resilience and diverse skills to the workforce. This partnership will enable them to progress and work in corporate roles, making them economically self-reliant and enhancing their welfare. We appreciate Amazon’s efforts to include soldiers, their families, and war widows, and to recognise their invaluable skills.”

Hundreds of ex-servicemen are already part of Amazon’s workforce in India. The company supports their career growth by preparing them for interviews, providing mentorship through networks like Warriors at Amazon, and offering development opportunities tailored specifically for military families.

This initiative reflects Amazon’s commitment to building an inclusive workplace that provides opportunities to women, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ communities, ex-servicemen, army spouses, and war widows. The MoU represents another step in including diverse talent across Amazon’s wide network of operations.

Sharing her experience, Priyanka Bali, Senior Product Manager, Amazon Devices and a soldier’s spouse, said:
“Being a soldier’s wife comes with unique challenges, especially when you have to relocate often while also trying to grow your career. At Amazon, flexibility and support have helped me build a stable and fulfilling career while honouring my family’s commitment to military service. I feel empowered to be part of a company that truly understands the values of military families.”
