‘Azad Aur Azadi’ Theatre Production Pays Tribute to Chandrashekhar Azad While Questioning Contemporary Society
Theatrical Presentation Azad Aur Azadi Invokes the Spirit of India’s Freedom Struggle While Raising Searching Questions About Contemporary Challenges

On the birth anniversary of the legendary revolutionary and immortal martyr Chandrashekhar Azad, Arts New Way Organisation (ANWO), in collaboration with Virat Acting Lab, presented a compelling theatrical production titled “Azad Aur Azadi” at the Blank Canvas Auditorium of LTG Auditorium, Mandi House. Based on poetry and dramatic narration, the performance not only paid tribute to the glorious legacy of India’s freedom movement but also mounted a powerful critique of the social, political, and moral distortions of the present day, prompting profound introspection among the audience.
The event was graced by Amit Kumar Pandey as the Chief Guest.
Distinguished guests included Mrs Monika Malhotra (Dehradun), senior Congress leader miss Sanjita Lisham, poet Indu “Raj” Nigam (Convenor, Parampara Sanstha), and poet Rajendra Nigam “Raj” (Founder, Parampara Sanstha). Commending the creative endeavour of the artistes, the dignitaries observed that theatre serves as a mirror to society and plays a vital role in strengthening democratic values, social consciousness, and national thought.
The production’s greatest strength lay in its refusal to confine Chandrashekhar Azad’s life, ideals, and sacrifice to the pages of history. Instead, it employed his revolutionary spirit to interrogate pressing contemporary concerns, including social inequality, injustice, moral decline, the challenges confronting the youth, freedom of expression, and the erosion of democratic values. The performance underscored that freedom is not merely liberation from colonial rule, but an unceasing struggle against every form of oppression, fear, and injustice.
Through this production, Arts New Way Organisation (ANWO) and Virat Acting Lab once again demonstrated that theatre transcends entertainment, serving instead as a powerful medium for social awakening, intellectual discourse, and transformative change. Both organisations remain committed to producing works that reconnect society with its historical legacy while encouraging thoughtful engagement with contemporary realities.
Event organiser Rizwan Raza remarked that the objective of Azad Aur Azadi was not merely to pay homage to Chandrashekhar Azad, but to acquaint the younger generation with the enduring relevance of his ideals and sacrifices.
He emphasised that the dream of India envisioned by Azad would remain incomplete unless society stood fearlessly against injustice, inequality, and oppression.
The performance featured an accomplished ensemble comprising Arvind Kumar, C.R. Suresh, Kuldeep Vashishth, Aarav Vats, Prem Prajapati, Rajeev Sharma, and Saira Ali, each delivering powerful performances that captivated the audience. The seamless integration of poetry, narration, and dramatic expression evoked the spirit of India’s freedom movement while inspiring reflection on several pressing contemporary issues.

Kuldeep Vashishth, in particular, delivered a remarkable portrayal of Chandrashekhar Azad, vividly capturing the revolutionary’s courage, resilience, and unwavering ideological conviction. Equally commendable were the performances of Arvind Kumar, C.R. Suresh, Aarav Vats, Prem Prajapati, Rajeev Sharma, and Saira Ali, whose compelling portrayals added emotional depth and artistic excellence to the production.
The production was written, conceived, and directed by R. S. Vikal, who compellingly established that Chandrashekhar Azad’s struggle belongs not merely to history but continues to inspire every era that confronts injustice and inequality. Through his creative vision, he conveyed that the ideals of India’s freedom movement remain as relevant today as ever, demanding the same courage, conviction, and moral commitment to confront the distortions of contemporary society.
The evening concluded with a prolonged standing ovation, as the audience applauded the performers and organisers for delivering a thought-provoking cultural experience. Many described the production as a powerful dialogue between history and the present, affirming that the legacy of Chandrashekhar Azad is not merely to be remembered, but to be meaningfully lived and carried forward in contemporary society.
