Weather Update: Red Alert for Heatwave in Delhi and Punjab, Rain Predicted in Telangana and Karnataka

Delhi continues to face extreme heat, with temperatures ranging from 40.9°C to 45°C in various parts of the city. The heat index — which considers both temperature and humidity — has reached a dangerous 51.9°C. In response, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the capital.
Relief may be on the horizon, however, as a drop in temperatures is expected starting June 14, thanks to an approaching western disturbance. This weather system is likely to bring light rain and thunderstorms to northwest India, including Delhi, starting the night of June 13. Until then, severe heatwave conditions are expected to persist.
On Wednesday, Ayanagar recorded the highest temperature in Delhi at 45°C, followed by Palam (44.5°C), Ridge (43.6°C), Pitampura (43.5°C), Lodi Road (43.4°C), Safdarjung (43.3°C), and Mayur Vihar (40.9°C). The city also recorded its highest power usage of the season at 8,231 MW around 10:55 p.m., according to data from the State Load Dispatch Centre.
In Punjab, intense heat continues as dry conditions prevail and temperatures remain well above average. The IMD has issued a red alert for June 12 and 13, warning residents to take precautions against heat-related health risks. Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected across northwest India, including the western Himalayas, until June 13, with a gradual decrease after that.
Southern India: Rainy Conditions Expected
While the north struggles with scorching heat, parts of southern India are set to receive significant rainfall.
In Telangana, heavy rain is forecast for June 12 across ten districts: Adilabad, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Jagtial, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also likely in isolated areas throughout the state.
Karnataka, too, is seeing the return of the southwest monsoon after a short break. The IMD predicts widespread rainfall across the state through June 17. Coastal and north interior regions will see consistent rain, while south interior Karnataka will receive fairly widespread showers until June 14, intensifying to widespread rainfall from June 15 onward.
