Kolkata :
RG Stone Urology & Laparoscopy Hospital, Kolkata, through its RG Institute of Advanced Breast Care, has successfully treated a 68-year-old woman diagnosed with right breast cancer. Under the leadership of senior breast surgeon Dr. Tapti Sen, the patient underwent a modified radical mastectomy along with level-three axillary lymph node dissection.
This successful procedure highlights the hospital’s strong expertise in advanced breast cancer management, with a focused approach on precision treatment and early patient recovery.
Sharing her views on the procedure, Dr. Tapti Sen, Consultant – Breast Surgery at RG Stone Urology & Laparoscopy Hospital, Kolkata, stated,
“Modified radical mastectomy continues to be an important treatment option for breast cancer patients with lymph node involvement. Timely diagnosis, appropriate surgery, and structured post-operative care lead to better outcomes and significantly improve the patient’s quality of life.”
The patient had reported a painless swelling in her right breast for the past one year, which had gradually increased in size. Clinical examination and imaging revealed a hard, irregular lump measuring 3.3 x 3 cm in the lower quadrant of the right breast, without involvement of the skin or deeper underlying structures. A mammogram and tru-cut biopsy of the right breast confirmed carcinoma of the right breast.

A whole-body PET-CT scan showed that the disease was localized to the affected breast region, with no evidence of spread to other parts of the body. Following immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing, the patient underwent a modified radical mastectomy with axillary lymph node clearance.
Prior to surgery, all necessary investigations and anesthetic clearance were obtained, and the opinion of a medical oncologist was also taken. The patient and her family were thoroughly counseled about the treatment plan and post-surgical precautions, including the prevention of complications such as lymphedema and wound infection.
The patient was discharged 48 hours after surgery with a drain in situ and is currently in stable condition. A comprehensive multidisciplinary team, including medical oncology specialists, continues to monitor her care to ensure optimal and long-term treatment outcomes.
