Appeal for Amicable Resolution of Recent AMU Campus Unrest
New Delhi : Irshad Ahmad, Advocate of the Supreme Court of India and former President of the AMU Old Boys’ Association-Delhi, has written to the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, urging the university administration to safeguard the rich legacy and ethos of the institution in light of the recent unrest on campus. The unrest has arisen from peaceful student protests concerning the unjustified fee hike, demands for democratic rights including student union elections, and other related issues.
Irshad Ahmad has called upon the administration to engage in open dialogue with the students, emphasizing the need to resolve disputes amicably and with due regard for the historical values of AMU. He has further urged the administration to roll back any unjustified fee hikes and to give proper attention to the genuine demands of the students, underscoring the importance of preserving AMU’s tradition of peaceful coexistence and intellectual debate.
It has been reported in some sections of the media that there was police action during these peaceful student protests. Such actions are undemocratic, unfair, unjust, undesirable, and strongly condemnable. The administration should refrain from such measures and, instead, initiate a constructive dialogue with the students.
Through this appeal, Irshad Ahmad has reiterated that institutions like AMU thrive only when the voices of students are heard and respected, and when decisions are guided by fairness and empathy.
