Kolkata Gangrape Case: TMC Leader Madan Mitra Sparks Outrage With Controversial Remark
kolkata : Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Madan Mitra has triggered massive outrage after making a controversial statement regarding the recent gangrape incident at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata’s Kasba area.
A female law student was allegedly gangraped inside the college premises on Wednesday, June 25. Reacting to the shocking incident, Mitra suggested that the incident should serve as a warning to girls not to visit colleges when they are closed or respond to calls offering student leadership positions.
“This incident sends a message to girls that if someone calls you to a closed college promising you a position in the student unit, do not go. If that girl had not gone, this would not have happened,” Mitra was quoted as saying by ANI.
Further blaming the survivor, Mitra added that the student should have informed someone before going or taken friends along to avoid such a situation. “If she had told someone or gone with a few friends, this incident could have been avoided. The accused took advantage of the situation,” he claimed.
Mitra’s controversial remarks come close on the heels of TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee’s equally criticized comment, in which he said, “If a friend rapes a friend, how can you ensure security?”
Meanwhile, Mitra sought to distance the party from the main accused, Manojit Mishra, who is known to be associated with the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP).
“TMC is a big party. Many people get photos taken with leaders and later claim to be part of the party. Only a psychologist can tell what truly lies in a person’s mind,” Mitra said, stressing that the party cannot be blamed for an individual’s actions.
Special Investigation Team Formed
As outrage grows, Kolkata Police has set up a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly probe the case. The SIT will be headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Pradip Kumar Ghosal from the South Suburban Division.
Three accused individuals — Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay — have been arrested and remanded to police custody until July 1.
The incident has triggered massive criticism of the ruling Trinamool Congress, with opposition parties demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation and stronger measures to ensure women’s safety in educational institutions.
