Movie Review
Title: Sant Tukaram

Based on the life of the great saint and poet Tukaram, a contemporary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, this film takes you back to the 16th century. Made after extensive research and long discussions with religious scholars, the film presents the life and work of the great poet and social reformer Saint Tukaram with complete honesty. The entire film unit, including the cast, spent a considerable amount of time in a small village in Maharashtra to authentically recreate the era and atmosphere of that time. The hard work of director Aditya Om and the lead and supporting cast is clearly visible. Interestingly, the film has been released at a time when political leaders in Maharashtra and some southern states are trying to gain attention by opposing the Hindi language. These leaders should learn from the makers of this film, who chose to make a film on this great Marathi saint in Hindi.

Speaking to the media before the film’s special screening, young director Aditya Om said, “It is a matter of pride for me to make a film on a great saint. I want today’s young generation to learn about our rich heritage of saints. In the future, I plan to make films on Sant Kabir and Sant Tulsidas as well.”

Story Plot
The film, shot entirely in a village near Kolhapur, Maharashtra, authentically depicts Tukaram’s devotional movement and his role as a social revolutionary. Having renounced worldly attachments like his wife and children, Tukaram devotes himself to Lord Vitthal. At home, he faces criticism from his wife, and in the village, he is opposed by orthodox priests. Yet, through his poetry and devotional songs (Abhangas), he continues to raise his voice against untouchability, caste discrimination, superstitions, and orthodox practices.

Acting and Direction
Marathi superstar Subodh Bhave’s performance is the film’s USP. With his exceptional acting, he brings the character of Tukaram to life on screen. Arun Govil shines as Lord Vitthal, and despite a small role, Sanjay Mishra leaves a strong impact. Sheena Chouhan delivers an impressive performance as Tukaram’s wife. The supporting cast also portrays their roles effectively. Director Aditya Om has done complete justice to the script.

Overall
With complete honesty and devotion, young director Aditya Om presents the historical and social significance of Sant Tukaram through this film. It shows how this great saint worked to unite people in villages through his devotional songs and created an atmosphere of social equality. While watching the film, you’ll realize that the saint’s personality was revolutionary—but a revolution rooted in love and compassion. Marathi superstar Subodh Bhave, known as the king of Marathi biopics, breathes life into the role of Sant Tukaram with his powerful performance. If you enjoy clean, culturally rich films rooted in our ancient religious heritage, and wish to learn about this great saint in depth, then take your family to a nearby theatre and meet Sant Tukaram.
