Kanwar Yatra: A Path of Devotion or a Stage for Display?

A Time for Introspection

“Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah” He who protects Dharma is, in turn, protected by Dharma. This timeless Sanskrit dictum is not merely a verse but an enduring message of Indian civilization. The true purpose of religion is to cultivate self-discipline, compassion, humility, and moral restraint. When these virtues are replaced by arrogance, aggression, and disorder, introspection becomes essential.

The Kanwar Yatra, undertaken during the holy month of Shravan, is one of India’s largest religious pilgrimages. Millions of devotees carry the sacred waters of the River Ganga to offer Jalabhishek to Lord Shiva. The Shiva Purana and the Skanda Purana extensively describe the significance of worshipping Lord Shiva and the sanctity of the Ganga. Lord Shiva himself symbolizes renunciation, penance, compassion, and the welfare of all beings. Therefore, the true essence of the Kanwar Yatra should be devotion, humility, and self-restraint—not public display.

Today, society faces an important question: Has the Kanwar Yatra retained the same spiritual character for which it was traditionally revered?

At many places, alongside sincere devotion, reports also emerge of excessively loud DJ music, dancing on public roads, traffic disruptions, violations of public order, and, in some instances, incidents of violence. It is equally true that the overwhelming majority of Kanwariyas complete their pilgrimage peacefully and with discipline. Nevertheless, a few unfortunate incidents often overshadow the entire tradition. The purpose of a religious pilgrimage is to draw closer to God, not to demonstrate power or compete with others. Lord Shiva is pleased not by deafening sound systems but by purity of heart and sincere devotion. In the Indian spiritual tradition, prayers conclude with the invocation, “Shantih, Shantih, Shantih”—peace at the individual, social, and universal levels.

Another important issue also deserves attention. If some individuals are found engaging in misconduct under the influence of intoxicants, such cases must be investigated impartially and dealt with strictly under the law. However, without credible evidence, it would be inappropriate to conclude that intoxication alone is the root cause of every untoward incident. Inadequate crowd management, personal disputes, infiltration by anti-social elements, rumours, and disregard for the rule of law may also contribute to such situations. Every incident, therefore, deserves an objective and evidence-based investigation. Solutions emerge from facts, not from allegations.

It is equally tragic that every year the Kanwar Yatra witnesses reports of road accidents, electrocution, drowning in rivers or canals, and other mishaps resulting in the deaths or injuries of numerous devotees. These are not merely statistics; they represent lifelong grief for countless families. If this sacred pilgrimage is observed with greater caution, proper safety measures, and strict discipline, many such tragedies can be prevented. Ensuring safety is a shared responsibility of the administration, religious organizations, and the devotees themselves.

In Hindu philosophy, one of Lord Shiva’s revered names is Ashutosh—the One who is easily pleased by sincere devotion. Nowhere does Lord Shiva teach that devotion should be measured by noise, crowds, or public display. His life teaches that the highest form of strength is self-control. The Kanwar Yatra is a festival of surrender, not of competition. It is not an occasion to prove whose DJ is louder, whose procession is longer, or whose display is grander. When devotion turns into rivalry, its spiritual purpose is inevitably diminished.

India is a land of diverse faiths and cultures. When a religious pilgrimage reflects discipline, service, cleanliness, humility, and compassion, it earns the respect of people from every community. Conversely, if violence, fear, or disorder becomes associated with it, the image of the entire tradition suffers. Every devotee should therefore conduct himself in a manner that inspires others to say, “This is the true spirit of religion.”

The dignity of religion is upheld not merely by temples or sacred scriptures but by the conduct of its followers. If a Kanwariya assists the elderly, helps the injured, obeys traffic regulations, speaks courteously, and respects the law, that itself becomes the highest form of worship offered to Lord Shiva.

Society, religious organizations, and the administration share a collective responsibility to ensure that the Kanwar Yatra remains safe, disciplined, and spiritually enriching. Religious leaders should consistently promote the values of restraint and peace, safety protocols must be implemented rigorously, and anyone violating the law should face impartial legal action. Such measures will protect both religious faith and social harmony.

Ultimately, the real question is not how large the Kanwar Yatra has become. The true question is how closely it reflects the ideals of Lord Shiva. If the pilgrimage embodies compassion, discipline, service, peace, and self-restraint, only then can it truly be called a journey in the spirit of Shiva.

“Shivam Shantam Advaitam” — Shiva is the embodiment of auspiciousness, peace, and harmony. This alone should remain the enduring message of the Kanwar Yatra.
