New Delhi, Mehrauli: The historic and cultural stronghold of Mehrauli is one of Delhi’s oldest and most vibrant localities. On one hand, the ancient Yogmaya Temple has stood for centuries as a center of faith for devotees, while on the other, the radiant Dargah of Hazrat Khwaja Syed Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (R.A.) continues to be a spiritual beacon for people across the world. In addition, the globally renowned cultural festival Phoolwalon ki Sair also originates from here, giving Mehrauli an international identity. Because of these features, millions of devotees, tourists, and visitors are drawn to this historic town every year.
However, the dilapidated condition of Mehrauli’s roads has become a serious issue. The broken and worn-out streets not only cause difficulties for the local residents but also inconvenience and pose dangers to visiting pilgrims and tourists. During the festive season, when the crowds grow even larger, the risk of accidents increases manifold.
To address this grave concern, the Mehrauli Residents Welfare Association (RWA) has taken proactive steps. On Tuesday, during an important meeting chaired by the SDM of Mehrauli, RWA President Sandeep Bali raised these issues strongly. He also submitted a memorandum to the SDM, demanding urgent repair of Mehrauli’s roads and improvement in cleanliness.
Key Points of the Memorandum:
Coordination for festive preparations: Emphasis on stronger coordination between the administration and local social organizations for upcoming festivals.
Effective implementation of the Chief Minister’s Cleanliness Campaign: Demand to ensure full execution of the sanitation drive in Mehrauli to maintain hygiene across the locality.
Immediate repair of major roads: Special focus on repairing the road from Yogmaya Temple to Qutub Minar, which is in extremely poor condition.
Sandeep Bali’s Statement:
Mehrauli RWA President Sandeep Bali said, “Mehrauli is not only significant for Delhi but also holds global cultural and religious importance. The Yogmaya Temple and the Dargah of Hazrat Khwaja Syed Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (R.A.) are living symbols of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb (communal harmony). But it is deeply unfortunate that the roads leading to these sacred sites are in a deplorable state. With the festive season bringing larger crowds, the risk of accidents due to these broken roads increases several times over.”
He further added, “As the hub of globally renowned events like Phoolwalon ki Sair, it is the administration’s responsibility to prioritize the repair of Mehrauli’s roads and the improvement of its sanitation system. Our organization is ready to cooperate with the administration at every step, but now is the time for concrete and immediate action.”
Local Residents’ Response:
The initiative taken by Mehrauli RWA has been widely appreciated by local residents. Many expressed hope that the administration would seriously consider Sandeep Bali’s appeal and take swift steps to improve the condition of the roads and sanitation. Residents pointed out that the broken roads not only hamper daily commuting but also damage the area’s image among tourists and devotees.
The Road Ahead:
Repairing Mehrauli’s roads and improving its sanitation system is not only a necessity for the local community but also an essential step toward preserving Delhi’s cultural and religious heritage. Swift action from the administration is expected so that during the upcoming festive season, devotees and tourists can experience better facilities in this historic town.
