National Medical Forum Organizes a Seminar on ‘Heart Attack After a Heart Attack! How to Prevent It?

New Delhi- It has been commonly observed that the patients after the 1st Heart attack are at a very risk of another Heart attack or stroke leading to untimely & unfortunate preventable death. This high risk of second event is commonly prevented by giving the standard medicines including Statins, blood thinners, Angioplasty, Bypass Surgery & other therapies. Even after that the risk of heart attack remains high to 3-5 percent per year, more so in Indian community.
Highlighting this fact, today at Sanjeevan Hospital, a Seminar was organized on the topic “Heart attack ke baad Heart Attack! Kaise Roke?”, where the Post-heart attack patients and the family Physicians were invited and participated in this important seminar.
Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Manav Aggarwal the Director Cardiologist at Sanjeevan Hospital, emphasized that all these patients of heart attack who are getting a repeat heart attacks are suffering from lower quality of life, greater depression and physiological stress. The mental capabilities are lesser than the patient at the 1st attack, because of this the compliance of medication and change in their lifestyle impact upon their long term prognosis, hospital readmissions and health care cost, which is called “Residual Risk”.
Residual Risk is multifactorial, i.e. older age, male gender, uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol levels, etc. which causes incidence of repeat heart attack and stroke in these patients.
Dr. Prem Aggarwal the Sr. Cardiologist at Sanjeevan Hospital, recommended that these patients of heart attack become more important when they are coupled with other diseases presence like Chronic Kidney disease, diabetes, obesity & others. He emphasized that diet is the leading risk factor for the cause of death in the world. Modifying diet to a healthier one can be a key component for improved individual and population risk of heart attack after heart attack. A healthy diet predominantly vegetarian supported by fish, fruits, legumes & nuts which should be low in salt and no saturated fats. Fat should be derived only from the plant based oils.
Dr. Prem Aggarwal emphasized that with diet and exercise we are not able to maintain our LDL Cholesterol less than 70, then we may take certain medicines like statin, PCSK9 inhibitor to reduce this risk.
The meeting was presided by Dr. B.C. Bansal, the Sr. Neuro-Physician and attended by large number of Physicians and Post-heart attack patients.
